ROOF reconstruction · CatañO

Juan

Juan, 61, lives with his wife in Barriada Juana Matos, Cataño. Hurricane María severely damaged their roof, but the storm's impact didn't end there. Shortly afterward, Juan suffered a cerebrovascular accident (stroke) that changed his daily life. He worked patiently to regain his strength and speech while continuing to care for the home he and his wife shared.

For nearly four years, Juan did what many Puerto Rican homeowners have had to do after the hurricanes: patch the roof whenever he could and hope it would withstand the next rainy season. But temporary repairs could never replace the structural work the house truly needed.

A community leader familiar with the neighborhood referred Juan's case to PRoTechos. After assessing the home, our team reconstructed the damaged roof, providing Juan and his wife with a safe, hurricane-resistant roof they could depend on for years to come.

Juan's project also became an opportunity to fulfill another part of PRoTechos' mission: workforce development. Apprentice Denise, 23, joined the reconstruction as part of her hands-on training. A graduate in Culture and Tourism from the University of Puerto Rico, Denise was eager to build practical construction skills while serving her community.

Throughout the project, Denise often took the lead in communicating with Juan, building a relationship that reflected the heart of the Learn and Serve model. Every roof reconstruction creates more than a safer home—it also prepares the next generation of skilled carpenters committed to helping Puerto Rico recover.
