Ilia
Ilia was born and raised in San Germán, where her home holds a lifetime of memories. But after Hurricane María struck Puerto Rico in 2017, the place that had always provided comfort and security became a source of constant uncertainty.
The hurricane left Ilia’s roof severely damaged. For years, she lived with leaks and the ongoing concern that the structure above her could no longer protect her home from heavy rain or another major storm.
At 70 years old, Ilia needed more than another temporary repair. She needed a permanent roof that would allow her to feel safe in her home again.
PRoTechos reconstructed Ilia’s roof, restoring the protection Hurricane María had taken away. The project helped preserve not only the structure of her house, but also the home and memories she had built over decades in San Germán.
Reflecting on the people who helped make the reconstruction possible, Ilia shared:
“If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have a roof over my head. I always pray to God to watch over every person who helped rebuild my roof.”
For Ilia, the new roof represents safety, stability, and the reassurance that she can remain in the community she has always called home. Her words are also a reminder that every roof rebuilt is made possible through the collective efforts of donors, volunteers, apprentices, community partners, and the families who place their trust in PRoTechos.
